I just love making dishes with beans. And green beans (also known as string beans) are no exception. People sometimes confuse asparagus and string beans, but actually they’re completely different. But they do have one thing in common, though – they’re both absolutely delicious. And today I’ll tell you the secret to making amazing green beans.
Why Green Beans Are A Great Part Of A Healthy Diet
- Green beans are a wonderful source of vitamins A, C and K, and they’re also rich in fiber and folic acid. Numerous studies have shown that including string beans in your diet can decrease the risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Green beans are also a great source of iron, riboflavin, potassium and magnesium. Now you can probably see why I love them so much!
- Asparagus beans are high in chlorophyll, which, according to studies, may block the carcinogenic effects of grilling meat at high temperatures. That is, if you love a good barbeque, it definitely won’t hurt to have some string beans as a side dish.
- When buying green beans, we usually have the option of getting them fresh, frozen or canned. I prefer getting my green beans fresh or frozen, just because I feel like they are healthier that way. In fact, you can even eat string beans raw. You just need to rinse them well, trim off the ends and season with oil, salt and a little vinegar. Here’s how to make frozen string beans delicious. Everything about this recipe is as simple and fast as possible. I am sure you’ll fall in love with this method as much as I have and will always cook your string beans this way.

Assemble all of the ingredients. You’ll notice that I didn’t state the amount of ingredients used in this dish. This is because the amounts will vary depending on how many beans you want to cook. If using frozen green beans, make sure not to thaw them before cooking, as that may make it mushy and too soft. We want our beans to stay a little firm and crunchy. Since frozen green beans are usually pre-cooked, we don’t need to boil them for long – just throw them in a pot of boiling water for about 30 seconds. If using fresh green beans, you’ll need to boil them for a little longer – about 1 minute. The amount of water used will vary depending on the amount of beans – they should be completely submerged.

Toss the cooked beans into a colander to drain off the excess liquid.

Peel and thinly slice several cloves of garlic.

In a skillet, heat up some butter and saute the garlic slices. If you like, you can use a blend of butter and vegetable oil.

Toss the blanched beans into the skillet and saute them for about a minute.

Salt the beans and garlic to taste and add some freshly squeezed lemon juice. If you like, you can also add some thinly sliced hot red peppers or some dried chili flakes.
